MPI Summerfiar Booth 2017Arny Stoller wishes to thank everyone for helping with Summerfair this year. We spoke to hundreds of people, handed out season brochures, postcards for each of our upcoming productions and discount coupons for Godspell. Many filled out slips to enter a raffle for a season subscription thus swelling our list for future publicity.

VERY SPECIAL THANKS to Art Kibby and Bill Pauly for assembling all the material, setting up the booth on Friday, manning it for the first shift and then striking it on Sunday.

ALSO, THANK YOU VERY MUCH to all the other people who manned it over the three day event of Summerfair: Mollie Barresi, Chris Cullen, Dan Maloney, Audrey Morrison, Tom Peters, Karina & Fred Rothzeid, Breianne Sheehan & Leslie, Amy Sullivan, Traci Taylor, Linda & Steve Winslow, Lauren Woodiwiss and Liz Venn.

New Seating ChartThrough your generous contributions and grants from local Arts organizations, Summerfair and ArtsWave, our auditorium will have brand new seating for the start of the 2017-2018 season. These seats are wider, have greatly improved back support and feature arm rests.

In addition to the new seats, we will add LED aisle lights at each step. For those with hearing loss we will install an audio induction loop system to wirelessly receive the actors’ voices through your own T-coil equipped hearing aid or by borrowing a receiver at our ticket desk. For more information, please check our website: mariemontplayers.com/hearingloop

MPI auditorium under constAuditorium Remodeling Right after the DollHouse strike, with Steve Winslow’s help, we moved all the seats to a POD in the parking lot for temporary storage. Steve Farley pulled up the old carpet and sanded and cleaned the floor and the other wood surfaces. Bill Pauly and I spent the next four weeks rebuilding the platforms to accept the new seats, while Steve Farley and Kim Woods prepped and painted the entire room.

Warren Brown, of Brown Audio Services spent a day installing the hearing loop, and an electrician and Steve pulled out the old wiring and installed the new electric. The carpet was installed in two days by the pros at CJ’s Wholesale Flooring.

Bill and Steve will wire the low voltage LED aisle lights, then our original seats will be put back until Godspell closes.

The final phase of this project is to install our new seats, which is scheduled for the end of July/first week of August, in time for the start of our new season with The Wisdom of Eve.

One challenging part of the new construction was building four rolling platform sections for the “B” row to accommodate wheelchairs. This is necessary to comply with ADA requirements and to give us space for set construction.

One of Neil Simon’s lesser-known comedies, The Star Spangled Girl is the story of a hilarious love triangle between two life-long friends and (literally) the girl next door. It’s San Francisco in the late 1960s and the political climate is tense; Andy and Norman are radical liberals struggling to make a living through their political magazine “Fallout”. Sophie, an aspiring Olympic swimmer, and as American as apple pie, moves into their building and captures Norman’s affections, but they are not reciprocated. Norman's obsession with Sophie forces Andy to hire her at the magazine just to keep Norman focused on writing for the cause. What happens next threatens both the future of the magazine and Norman and Andy’s friendship.

Characters:
A note about the ages of the characters: it must be believable that Andy and Norman have graduated college and that Sophie competed in the Olympics but otherwise there are no age restrictions. That said, depending on the casting of one character will impact the rest. For example, if the actress playing Sophie is 25, Andy and Norman will be cast in a similar age-range.

Andy: Uber liberal. The salesman behind Fallout magazine. Very sarcastic.

Norman: Also Uber liberal but more of a hippy type to Andy’s suit and tie persona. The writer of Fallout magazine. Hopelessly in love with Sophie.

Sophie: Ultra conservative, All-American girl next door. Olympic swimmer from down South. Will require a Southern accent.
